Ripley did not say if it was a student or staffer who was diagnosed with the highly contagious disease but urged parents to keep their children home from school if they come down with a cold followed by a cough.
New Jersey mandates all children entering 6th grade who are 11 years or older get vaccinated against whooping cough, Ripley said.
According to the Mayo Clinic, whooping cough is highly-contagious and is "marked by a severe hacking cough followed by a high-pitched intake of breath that sounds like 'whoop.'"
